Checked 17 August 2026. Thailand’s tourist VAT-refund scheme has eligibility, retailer, documentation, export and departure conditions. Ask at the shop before paying; an ordinary receipt alone may not support a claim.

At the shop

Buy from a participating business displaying the VAT Refund for Tourists sign. Present the passport used for travel and request the required tourist VAT-refund form and original tax invoice on the purchase date. Check that names, passport details and amounts are correct.

Purchase thresholds and timing

The Revenue Department’s published guidance describes minimum purchase conditions and requires goods to leave Thailand within a specified period. Thresholds and procedures can change, so verify the current official page instead of relying on an old blog figure.

Before airline check-in

Certain goods and claims must be presented for inspection before checking baggage. Arrive early, keep the goods accessible, and follow signs for Customs/VAT Refund inspection at the international departure airport.

After immigration

Complete the refund process at the designated counter or supported channel. High-value or specified luxury goods may need to remain available for another inspection.

Common reasons claims fail

  • The shop was not participating.
  • The form was not issued on the purchase date.
  • Name or passport details do not match.
  • Original invoices or goods are unavailable.
  • Required inspection occurred too late.
  • The traveler or goods do not meet scheme conditions.
