Travel insurance is most useful when it matches the activities you will actually do. A low premium is not a bargain if the policy excludes motorcycles, pre-existing conditions, adventure activities or the full cost of treatment and evacuation.

Read the coverage, not just the headline limit

Check emergency medical treatment, evacuation, repatriation, trip interruption, baggage, electronics, excess amounts and exclusions. Confirm whether outpatient treatment and prescribed medication are included.

Motorcycles and activities

Many claims fail because the traveler lacked the required licence, helmet, insurance or policy endorsement. Diving, climbing and other activities may have depth, altitude, operator or certification conditions.

Payment and assistance

Hospitals may request payment guarantees or deposits. Save the insurer’s assistance number, policy certificate and instructions for seeking approval. In an emergency, obtain care first, then contact assistance as soon as practical.

Medication and records

Carry essential medication in original packaging with the prescription or clinician letter when appropriate. Rules differ by substance; check controlled-medicine requirements before travel. Keep allergies, conditions and emergency contacts accessible offline.

Before buying

  • Declare relevant medical history accurately.
  • Check trip dates and all destinations.
  • Confirm coverage for planned vehicles and activities.
  • Understand excesses and documentation requirements.
  • Keep receipts, reports and communication after an incident.
