Checked 17 August 2026. Thailand entry rules depend on the passport you use, travel purpose, intended length of stay and the rules in force on your arrival date. This guide explains the checking process; it is not legal advice or a substitute for a Thai embassy or immigration officer.

Start with your exact passport

Do not infer your rule from residency, departure country or a companion’s passport. Check the nationality and passport type you will present at the border. Travelers with dual nationality should confirm the implications of the passport used for the trip.

Separate three commonly confused routes

  • Visa exemption: eligible passport holders may enter without obtaining a tourist visa in advance, subject to the conditions in force.
  • Visa on arrival: a separate facility for specified nationalities and conditions; it is not simply another name for visa exemption.
  • Tourist visa: permission obtained before travel, including through the official Thai e‑Visa system where available.

Lists, permitted stays, extension practices and documentary requirements can change. That is why this page does not freeze a nationality table that may become misleading.

Use the official decision path

  1. Visit the Thai e‑Visa portal or the website of the Thai embassy/consulate responsible for your location.
  2. Choose the passport nationality, current location, purpose and expected stay that match the real trip.
  3. Read the required documents, processing location and validity conditions.
  4. Apply early enough for review; do not buy a non-refundable itinerary solely around an optimistic processing estimate.

Documents and proof

Depending on the route, authorities or carriers may ask for passport validity, onward travel, accommodation, funds and evidence supporting the stated purpose. Carry accessible copies of important documents, but protect passport and financial data from unverified agents.

Entry permission and length of stay

A visa’s validity window is not always the same as the period granted after entry. Check the immigration stamp or electronic record at arrival and address an error immediately. Overstay can have serious consequences; do not treat it as a routine fee-based extension.

Also complete the arrival formalities

A visa or exemption does not replace the Thailand Digital Arrival Card. Complete the official TDAC process within its required window and keep a copy accessible.
